An 87-year-old Mesa woman thought she had found love online after losing her husband. Seven months later, she had lost $500,000.
The scammer found her after she posted about her husband’s passing on social media and slowly built her trust. Eventually, he convinced her to send money through crypto ATMs before she withdrew a $500,000 cashier’s check and sent it to him. Her own bank reportedly tried to stop the transaction, but she went through with it anyway.
Once she realized it was all a scam, she said she was so embarrassed she didn’t even want to tell police. Mesa PD’s Financial Crimes Unit eventually traced the transactions and recovered nearly $200,000.
She’s now sharing her story so other people don’t fall for the same thing.
Would you have trusted someone after 7 months of talking every day?
