Arizona pet owners say scammers are getting more convincing by using AI-generated photos of missing pets to make it look like they’ve actually found them.
One Scottsdale woman said someone contacted her claiming to have her missing dog and even sent what appeared to be an AI-generated photo before asking for money. She later found her dog safely and never paid the scammer.
Another Valley pet owner said someone claimed to have found her missing cat and demanded money. When she asked for proof, the photo looked believable at first, but a reverse image search revealed it was actually a stock photo.
Experts say AI is making these scams much harder to spot, so a photo alone may no longer be enough proof someone actually has your pet. One tip is to keep a unique identifying detail about your pet off public posts and flyers so you can ask anyone claiming to have them to prove it.
If your pet went missing, would a photo like this convince you to send money?
