In preparation for my upcoming exhibition at the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina umjetnickagalerijabih in Sarajevo, I am reflecting on Ferdinand Hodler and Jeanne Charles - his muse, companion and one of the key figures connecting his work to Sarajevo.
Together with her husband, the Bosnian diplomat Mehmed Ćišić, Jeanne Charles brought more than 100 works by Hodler into the Gallery’s collection. Decades later, during the Siege of Sarajevo, these works were protected by former national gallery curator Azra Begić.
For this exhibition, I will reinterpret several works by Ferdinand Hodler, each opening a different point of reflection and interpretation. The work shown here is my reinterpretation of Hodler’s portrait of Jeanne Charles, translated through glass into a new material and contemporary language.
