October 2nd is World Farm Animals Day! Like many of these “national holidays,” it gives us an excuse to highlight some of our cuts in our print shop at the Sacramento History Museum, especially since we have a variety of options for farm animals.
For today, Channey letterpress printed two hand carved woodcuts from the Lewis Winter Collection. These were made in the 1890s. Lewis Winter made a variety of farm related cuts as advertisement pieces in newspapers and magazines at his wood and photo engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910.
One woodcut depicts a dairy cow and what the other depicts is up for debate. This was printed with a mix of red and opaque white (to make pink) rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
