#MelissaMcCarthy is calling “bullsh*t” on the idea that comedies don’t work anymore.
The “Bridesmaids” star says Hollywood has made it increasingly difficult to get comedies made, arguing that the industry has become “so corporate,” one reason a “Bridesmaids 2” has never happened: “I miss the people that work off their gut.”
McCarthy remembers being told “the numbers are not looking good” before “Bridesmaids” even hit theaters. She trusted her gut that audiences would find it funny, and on opening night, she and director Paul Feig rushed to the ArcLight, where they stood in the back listening to “rolling, crazy laughter.”
Now, McCarthy is stepping far outside comedy to play Patsy Ramsey in Netflix’s “The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey.” The emotionally intense production had a psychologist on set at all times, which McCarthy says was “needed sometimes” during some of the most difficult scenes.
