Another humpback whale was recently found entangled in fishing gear off the West Coast. Thankfully, U.S. and Canadian rescuers were able to free the whale, which then swam free. This incident follows another entanglement of a humpback calf in the area in August. These entanglements are preventable. A commonsense solution is pop-up fishing gear, which avoids having lines in the water and is currently being used successfully in California fisheries. Sadly, pop-up gear is not being used in the area where this entanglement occurred. The entanglement problem won't go away on its own, and nobody wants whales to suffer for seafood," said ben4whales, oceans campaigner for the Center.
