Brokedown Palace… That’s really what these old homes are. The Grateful Dead’s song “Brokedown Palace” plays in the background of this house, and the title feels especially fitting. Like the song, this home carries a sense of history, memory, beauty, and impermanence. The original gold finish was beautiful, but it enhanced every crack, scar, and imperfection. So the decision was made not to erase them, but to preserve them—in white. The history is still there. The hand of the artisans is still there. Every imperfection is part of the story. Sometimes restoration isn’t about making something look new. It’s about honoring the people who built it, preserving the memory, and letting an old house show its age with dignity. With the Grateful Dead’s “Brokedown Palace” playing in the background, this transformation felt like a fitting tribute to the home’s past—and to the beauty of giving it a new life. #renovation #homeinteriors #brownstone #interiordesign #architecture
