Calcium is one of the most important minerals in a laying hen’s diet because it’s a major building block of the eggshell. And while a quality layer feed already contains calcium, every hen’s needs can be a little different, especially during periods of heavy laying or for older hens. That’s why personally I like to offer oyster shell free-choice on the side. Chickens are surprisingly good at regulating their own calcium intake, so the birds that need a little extra can take it while the others leave it alone. Without enough dietary calcium, a hen can pull calcium from her own skeletal reserves to keep producing eggs, which is why consistent access matters. @Eaton Pet and Pasture just launched their new USA-harvested oyster shells, giving your flock an easy supplemental source of calcium when they need it. 🇺🇸🐓 It’s a small addition to the coop that can make a big difference in supporting healthy hens and strong eggshells. #oystershells #calcium #backyardchickens #chickens #theshiloh...
