Smear animation looks like a pro-level trick, but the setup takes under a minute.
No keyframing motion blur by hand. “CC Smear” and “Echo” create that stretchy, fluid motion for you.
Here’s the setup:
① Make two layers
↳ A ball
↳ A circle (this becomes your smear)
② Keyframe the ball’s Position
This drives the whole effect
③ Add “CC Smear” to the circle
Link its “To” property to the ball’s Position using the pick whip
④ Tweak Reach & Radius
Adjust until the stretch feels natural
Now the step most people miss 👇
Apply “Echo” to the ball for an even smoother result:
⏱️ Echo Time: 0.004
🔁 Number of Echoes: 15
💡 Starting Intensity: 1.00
📉 Decay: 0.93
⚙️ Echo Operator: Maximum
That’s all it takes for a clean, buttery smear with no extra plugins.
Save this for your next animation, you’ll end up using it on everything.
