The Bortle Scale is a numeric scale that measures how dark the night sky is, from 1 (no light pollution) to 9 (inner-city skies). The lower the number, the better the sky will be for night-sky photography and seeing stars. If you’re trying to find the best skies near you for photography, look at a light pollution map and travel to the area with the lowest number on the Bortle Scale. This will yield the image with the most detail and brightest stars and galaxies, resulting in the most impressive image of the night sky. Austin Jackson is a landscape and outdoor photographer based in Southern Utah. He loves capturing great light in some of the world’s most stunning locations.
