The “biggest” change to driver licensing for 70 years has landed in Northern Ireland.
New drivers must follow rules including a minimum six-month mandatory learning period with online modules to complete before sitting a test, night-time passenger restrictions and “R” plates on the driver's vehicle for two years - otherwise they could receive three penalty points or a fine of up to £1,000.
The new rules apply to all recent passers, but are particularly aimed at 17 to 23-year-olds who accounted for 24% of fatal or serious collisions on roads in Northern Ireland in 2024.
