These machines can now navigate difficult terrain, recover after losing balance, climb stairs, carry heavy equipment, assist with industrial tasks, and enter dangerous environments where humans may be at risk.
Some versions are already being tested for firefighting, inspections, search and rescue, and military applications.
What started as a four-legged machine that could simply walk is becoming a much more capable platform for real-world work.
And as their mobility, sensors, autonomy, and AI systems continue to improve, the question is becoming less about whether robot dogs are possible and more about how much responsibility we are willing to give them.
They could make dangerous jobs safer and allow people to operate in environments that would otherwise be too risky.
But greater capability also brings questions about control, accountability, safety, and how these machines should be used.
