New report says Afghan War veterans couldn’t speak at their own ceremony due to “time constraints”‼️😳
New details surrounding the May 4 groundbreaking ceremony for the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan in Ottawa were disclosed in a federal response dated September 21, bringing renewed attention to how the ceremony was organized.
The roughly 40-minute ceremony reportedly costed $50,376. About 170 people attended, including just 12 Afghanistan veterans, but no Afghanistan veteran was given a formal speaking role. Veterans Affairs cited time limitations for the ceremony.
Veterans Affairs Minister Jill McKnight spoke, while four federal cabinet ministers were listed on the program.
More than 40,000 Canadians served in Afghanistan, and 158 Canadian Armed Forces members lost their lives during the mission.
The monument is being built at LeBreton Flats in Ottawa, with completion expected in late 2028.
