It took exactly 30 years for Club Leon to close one of its deepest ever wounds. In 1993, they lost the “Concacaf Champions’ Cup” thanks to a catastrophic turn of events at the very end of the competition. Back then, the final stage of the tournament consisted of four teams playing in a single round-robin tournament to determine a champion. Much different than how we do it today. On the final day, Saprissa beat SV Robinhood 9-1 and shockingly overtook Leon on goal difference, who’d held a comfortable lead on points and goal difference up to that point. Heartbreaking any way you slice it. Thirty years probably wasn’t enough to forget, but the joy of winning at BMO on Sunday more than made up for any pain caused in the past. You could see how much it meant to the team. Nothing but smiles from the players, and a few tears from the fans at the away end. If anyone deserves this joy, it’s them. The most coveted club trophy in the continent is finally in their hands. Patience is truly a virtue...
