Reading about what happened at Cornell University was not a surprise to me - over 80% of our clients at the Asiyah Center have experienced sexual assault.
Reading about what happened also takes me back to what happened a couple years ago when we reported to the police that a 17 year old girl was a victim of sexual assault. It was then when I first got a look of what the system is capable of, they questioned and refused to report something that no one would even want to talk about - let alone want to report. It takes so much courage to report domestic violence and sexual assault and women have almost nothing to gain when they do so, because the system does not hold abusers accountable sufficiently.
Many of them are shunned, ostracized, and neglected by police officers, imams, their families, and by their loved ones. We need to continue building systems where women are protected.
To anyone who is reading this and is a victim of sexual assault we believe you and we stand with you ❤️...
