Can you name it? 🤔🏁
The Lotus Type 72 is one of the most important Formula 1 cars ever built, and more than 50 years later it still looks brutally purposeful.
⠀
Introduced in 1970, the Type 72 helped redefine F1 design with side-mounted radiators, inboard brakes, torsion-bar suspension and a low wedge-shaped nose.
⠀
Powered by the legendary Ford-Cosworth DFV V8, the car produced roughly 440 to 475 horsepower while weighing as little as around 530 kg depending on specification.
⠀
Jochen Rindt drove the Type 72 to the 1970 Drivers’ Championship, becoming Formula 1’s only posthumous World Champion.
⠀
Emerson Fittipaldi then used the evolved Type 72D to win the 1972 Drivers’ Championship, while Lotus also secured the Constructors’ title that season.
⠀
Across its long 1970 to 1975 career, the Type 72 scored 20 Grand Prix victories and helped Lotus win three Constructors’ Championships and two Drivers’ Championships.
⠀
Would you call the Lotus Type 72 one of the greatest F1 cars ever made...
