Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday a 20% cut in how many generals and admirals are in the U.S. military.
The announcement took place at a Marine Corps Base in Quantico, located in Virginia.
"The number crunchers sat we've fired 10% of the generals and admirals across the force and that number sounds about right," Hegseth said during his speech. "And I know because I directed it. We've also reduced the overall number of general officer slots by an additional 10%. So yes, a 20% reduction across the board. Now the media calls that a purge. I call it accountability and [it's] long overdue."
The speech Hegseth gave was titled "State of the Force," where he discussed the future for the department.
