China is turning vacant schools and kindergartens into elderly care facilities as falling birth rates leave classrooms increasingly empty. Primary school admissions and preschool enrolments both dropped by around 10% in 2025, while China's birth rate fell to a record low of 5.63 births per 1,000 people.
