French students continued school blockades and took to the streets on Tuesday as nationwide protests called for better funding and improved conditions in schools.
Teenagers and preparatory-class students built barricades from trash cans outside schools in Paris and Strasbourg.
The protests began in Paris suburbs two weeks ago before spreading across France. The government has deployed riot police, saying the movement had evolved into urban violence.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has ordered ministers to address students’ demands, including replacing absent teachers, reviewing long school days and extending lunch breaks.
The government will also examine repairs to ageing school buildings, with ministers asked to submit initial proposals by the end of October.
The protests come as the government seeks to reduce a growing budget deficit amid concerns over France’s debt, weak growth and rising borrowing costs.
