Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised a passenger who intervened during a stabbing incident aboard a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, calling him a “big hero” on Wednesday.
The man arrived at Ben Gurion Airport wearing the blood-stained shirt he had worn during the flight, according to a video released by Netanyahu’s office.
Israeli officials said the flight’s co-pilot stabbed the pilot and tried to crash the aircraft. Passengers subdued him, allowing other pilots to land the plane safely in Saudi Arabia.
Netanyahu described the incident as a “highly severe security incident” and said Saudi authorities would question the co-pilot, identified by an Israeli official as an Omani national.
Flydubai said the reasons behind the incident remained unknown and warned against premature speculation. Israel’s Transport Ministry said a joint investigation would be conducted with the defence establishment.
