UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has launched a sharp attack on FIFA President Gianni Infantino over his shelved plan to sell a stake in FIFA’s commercial rights to private investors.
Speaking in Copenhagen, Čeferin invoked Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes, saying: “The emperor is naked.”
He accused FIFA of using terms such as “development,” “democratization” and “consultation” to describe a proposal he said did the opposite.
Infantino’s FIFA Forward Enterprise plan would have created a FIFA-controlled commercial subsidiary holding rights to major competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and Club World Cup. Private investors could have acquired up to 20%.
Infantino said the plan was intended to generate more money for football development and would be subject to consultation with FIFA’s 211 member associations.
The proposal was abandoned following widespread opposition.
