For Trinity professor Katsuo Nishikawa Chavez, studying abroad is a research lab for the social sciences. π
Through the Trinity in Japan and Performing Human Rights programs he co-created, Nishikawa helps students connect classroom learning with experiences in the field.
In Japan, students are challenged to slow down, observe their surroundings, and record what they notice in journals. In Palermo, students in Performing Human Rights connect the social sciences and humanities through theatre and engagement with migrant and refugee communities.
For Nishikawa, the goal goes beyond experiencing a new place. He wants students to engage with different perspectives, think critically about what they encounter, and develop the skills to collaborate, lead, and give back to society.
