📊 Why did protesters target the statue?
Former Luz y Fuerza del Centro workers and members of the Mexican Electricians’ Union marched to Los Pinos after protesting outside a Mexico City hotel where Calderón was appearing at a political forum.
They then attacked his bronze statue, removing its head and commemorative plaque. The protest was tied largely to Calderón’s 2009 decision to dissolve Luz y Fuerza del Centro, which affected more than 44,000 workers.
The statue itself had already been damaged in July 2025, when a tree fell on it during heavy rain and knocked it from its pedestal.
Authorities had previously said it would be restored and reinstalled.
After the vandalism, access to parts of the Los Pinos complex was temporarily restricted.
