Last week, our Lower and Middle Schools welcomed Larry Purcell from the Catholic Worker House in Redwood City. Using a single pencil and a bundle of pencils, Purcell offered students a simple but powerful illustration of the importance of community. Surrounded by parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends, we are strengthened by the people who support us—much like a bundle of pencils is difficult to break. For those who may be facing life without that same support, he reminded students of the difference a caring community can make.
Following his talk, Middle School students put that message into action by preparing sandwich bags for the Catholic Worker House, turning a lesson about compassion and connection into an opportunity to serve others.
