Mount Olympus Greek Figs 🏔️🇬🇷
A fruit older than the myths on that mountain.
A fig isn’t a normal berry. It’s a syconium: an inside-out flower cluster from the tree Ficus carica.
Those tiny crunchy bits are the real fruits, each from its own little flower, all packed into one soft shell.
Bees don’t pollinate most cultivated figs the usual way; a tiny wasp does the job for wild ones, though many market figs are self-fertile.
People have been growing them around the Mediterranean for thousands of years — one of the earliest cultivated plants.
In ancient Greece they were everyday food, travel rations, and offerings.
Sweet, high in fiber, with some calcium and potassium, they’re still the classic late-summer snack along these coasts: sun-ripe, a little salt in the air, Olympus in the distance 🍇🌊
