That's because until Gov. kimreynoldsia signed a new law June 1, Iowa had no licensing path for certified professional midwives. House File 265, which the Iowa Legislature passed early last month, is the result of years of effort from lawmakers and advocates to license and regulate professional midwives without a nursing degree. Supporters say such licensing is sorely needed in a state that already has a shortage of maternity care, particularly in rural areas. But major medical organizations still look at the midwife profession with a jaundiced eye, saying doctors and nurses remain better options for maternity care.
