History was made in the #SothebysLondon sale room this week when Bhupen Khakhar’s painting ‘Old Men Playing Chess’ quadrupled its high estimate in the Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art Auction. It set a new auction record for the artist, achieving £3.1 million.
‘Old Man Playing Chess’ was included in Khakhar’s historic 1972 solo exhibition at ‘Truth is Beauty and Beauty is God’ at Gallery Chemould. It belongs to a group of brightly colored neo-miniaturist paintings that Khakhar made late 60s and early 1970s.
The Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art Auction totaled £19.8 million, becoming the department’s highest total in its more than 30-year history.
