Homecoming. This tradition has inspired songs by the likes of Kanye West, Green Day and Lil Uzi Vert. It’s the namesake of a Spider-Man movie. It’s the title of a Julia Roberts series and a Beyoncé documentary. It’s all-encompassing for a week in October every year, but shapes American culture year-round.
At my high school, homecoming consisted of a month of dance rehearsals, 6 a.m. alarms to decorate the gym and losing my voice emceeing rallies. At Cal, it’s the band and cheer team performances, free goodies on Sproul Plaza, bringing parents to tailgates and spotting Oski everywhere. This phenomenon has held a sort of control over my fall semesters for the past six years, yet I’ve never actually questioned how this tradition came to fruition.
From early iterations of students-versus-alumni football games to the modern-day pep rallies and tailgates, homecoming has evolved continuously throughout the last century. Here is a look into some of its history.
