The color of clothing can influence how much solar radiation it absorbs. Dark surfaces generally absorb more incoming radiation, while lighter surfaces reflect more of it. Experiments comparing shirts of identical material and design have found substantial differences in surface temperature under strong sunlight. One outdoor study measured a difference of more than 15°C between some dark and white shirts under specific conditions. Wind, fabric, shade and infrared reflectance also matter, so color is only one part of the equation.
