They created a quantum state called a photonic supersolid, where light and matter interact to produce quasiparticles called polaritons. Under carefully controlled conditions, these polaritons developed an ordered structure resembling a crystal while retaining fluid like quantum behavior. This is important because it demonstrates that light based systems can reproduce properties normally associated with unusual states of matter.
