Uranium is used in an atomic bomb because certain uranium atoms, especially uranium 235, can undergo nuclear fission. When a uranium 235 nucleus absorbs a neutron, it splits and releases enormous energy along with additional neutrons. Those neutrons can trigger more fissions, creating a rapidly multiplying chain reaction. Nuclear weapons are designed to release this energy extremely quickly, producing an immense explosion.
