The term “sexual harassment” was coined at Cornell University in the mid 1970s by Lin Farley and colleagues after women began describing a pattern of unwanted sexual behavior in the workplace. The behavior itself was not new, but giving it a name helped women identify and challenge something that had long been normalized.
That history is especially striking now. In 2026, Cornell has faced renewed scrutiny over allegations that a former student was drugged and gang raped by seven fraternity members in 2024. She filed a civil lawsuit in September 2026, prompting prosecutors to reopen the criminal investigation. The allegations are disputed, and the case remains under investigation.
