UK health officials are investigating reports surrounding the death of a 28-year-old laboratory worker in Russia.
Daria Shipilova worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia and died after developing severe pneumonia from an unknown cause.
Local reports claimed she became ill after breaking a test tube containing dangerous bacteria, but Russian authorities say no laboratory accident or connection to the pathogens she handled has been established.
A hospital was quarantined and people who had contact with Daria were placed under medical observation as a precaution.
The UK Health Security Agency is now seeking further information through international health channels, but has stressed that the risk to the wider UK population remains very low.
Pneumonic plague is serious, but can be successfully treated with antibiotics when detected early.
This remains a suspected case. No plague outbreak has been confirmed.
