In the rare cases where men and women are genuinely platonic friends, it’s usually because there’s little or no sexual attraction between them.
That’s part of why women often feel more comfortable having close friendships with gay men than with straight men. The sexual tension simply isn’t there.
Put two single, heterosexual people of the opposite sex together and call it “friendship,” and eventually one of them may develop feelings, make a move, or start seeing the relationship differently.
And even when they’re both in relationships, attraction can still complicate things.
This is why I’m skeptical when a man says, “I just want to be friends with her.”
Sometimes he genuinely does.
But a lot of the time, “friendship” is just the socially acceptable way of staying close to a woman he’s attracted to while hoping an opportunity eventually presents itself.
In other words:
He’s not always a friend.
Sometimes he’s a suitor in disguise.
