Today, May 7th, students, faculty, and members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) united together in protest against Bowie State University’s lack of accountability regarding funding, employment, and tuition. Despite a recent grant of $50 million from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, due to low expected student enrollment, Bowie State is now $31 million short for Fiscal Year 2026–27. As a result, negotiated pay raises and other stipulations in staff’s initial contracts are not being honored by the university. Faculty have also been told to brace for impending layoffs. Students are expected to face a 2% increase in tuition, and the community is tired of it. Starting at the Student Center Lawn, protesters marched to The Torch and occupied the lawn in front of the Henry E. Administration Building, making noise to call for change.
