Five years can change a life in ways you cannot always imagine at the beginning. When my nephew Wasim left Kabul for Sweden, so much of his life had to be rebuilt. A new language, a new education system, a new culture, new relationships and eventually a new sense of what his future could look like. This year, he graduated with top grades across all three years of his Natural Sciences programme and is now beginning Engineering Physics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. As his uncle, I am incredibly proud of him. But his journey also makes me think about how quickly we can underestimate young people who arrive somewhere new carrying disruption, uncertainty or disadvantage with them. What we see at the beginning of somebody’s story tells us very little about what they may eventually become. Young refugees and migrants do not arrive without ambition, intelligence or potential.
