At only 17 years old, Edward Kang created an AI research project investigating whether the eyes could provide clues that help screen for conditions involving the brain. His project, RetinaMind, uses AI to analyze retinal images and look for subtle patterns associated with autism and ADHD. Kang trained machine learning models on retinal scans and developed a working prototype to demonstrate how the approach could potentially be used as a screening method. During testing, the system achieved roughly 89% accuracy when differentiating between autism, ADHD, and neurotypical cases. However, RetinaMind remains a research project and would need much more testing and validation before it could ever be considered for clinical use. Kang’s work earned him second place and a $175,000 award at the 2026 Regeneron Science Talent Search. A remarkable example of how young researchers are exploring completely new ways to apply AI to healthcare and scientific research. 🧠👁️🤖 📸 Chris Ayers Photogra...
