The UN has started a challenging operation to remove more than 1 million barrels of oil from the FSO Safer – a decaying supertanker moored off #Yemen’s Red Sea coast. The ship has been anchored off Yemen for 6 years without maintenance. This planetlabs satellite picture shows the arrival of the tanker Ndeavor at the #FSOSafer site to implement the salvage plan and offload the oil. This is excellent news: this is a vital step forward in avoiding a major human and environmental disaster in the Red Sea. Despite this ray of hope, the need for additional funding remains urgent.
