Cal Athletics released a merchandise collection this year honoring Cal football legend Joe Roth, who died from cancer shortly before graduating in 1977. Instead of donating the profits to cancer research or to Roth’s scholarship, Cal Athletics allegedly collected the proceeds for itself.
The collection was sold at the stadium during Cal football’s annual Joe Roth Memorial Game on Sept. 5 and featured multiple items, including a T-shirt with Joe Roth’s face on it and a hoodie with his number, 12. The collection was announced days before the game. In an SFGate article published last week, Joe Roth’s brother, Tom Roth, called on Cal Athletics to donate the proceeds from the collection to melanoma research or to the Joe Roth Scholarship Fund.
