Before the #abbottchicago5k this morning, I had my bib but no safety pins. “It’s fine,” said christinerburke. “We’ll each just take one off of ours for you.” And they did. And I pinned my bib on my chest, and our ever-growing girl gang ran 3.1 miles around town together. I ran so happily today, flanked by Christine, marywruns, deenakastor, joanbenoitsamuelson, carrie_tollefson, nnenna_runs, and birthday girl dorian_kail. I thought so much about running this race in 2023, in between my first two chemo sessions. In 2024, during an exceptionally hard season of life. And last year, going through chemo again, losing my hair while trying desperately not to completely lose my sense of self. This year was just fun. No drama. No big emotions. No need for “Opalite” on full blast. Because we are still dancing through the lightning strikes, but I feel safe from the storm.
