A U.S. Navy veteran and his family have received the first home they've ever owned thanks to an Iowa nonprofit. The gift from nonprofit Iowa Homes for Heroes and its partners is in recognition of sacrifice. Johnny Mellor is the second person the nonprofit, established in 2025, has given a home to. On Thursday, Oct. 8, the former Navy aviation structural mechanic and his family were shown their new four-bedroom, three-bathroom home in Urbandale by a group of supporters including Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. Mellor said that while accepting sacrifice is part of the job, he did not expect the sacrifice to be met with "overwhelming grace and generosity."
