THREE 1700s Brown Bess muskets recovered from a 1782 St. Augustine Shipwreck were preserved by the conservation lab at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum! They each have different patterns and various states of readiness, with the earliest pattern being a 1756 long, loaded with birdshot. The 1769 short was also loaded, but with buck and ball. Buck and ball loads are considered bad form, but both sides of the American Revolution used them. The final musket is a 1777 short pattern and was not loaded. The Museum partnered with the Florida Division of Historical Resources (DHR). The muskets were conserved, removing the outer layer of corrosion to reveal them, complete with intact stock, lock, and brass furniture. The Wrecked exhibit is on view in the Keepers’ House at the St. Augustine Light Station, part of general admission. See other incredible artifacts from this Revolutionary War shipwreck.
