#HipHopHistory - Common’s debut studio album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?, dropped on October 6, 1992, through Relativity Records, back when the Chicago MC was still known as Common Sense. His rise began a year earlier when he was featured in The Source’s influential “Unsigned Hype” column, helping him land a deal with Relativity. The label rolled out three singles from the project, led by “Take It EZ,” which reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart. “Soul by the Pound” followed at No. 7, while “Breaker 1/9” reached No. 10. Although Can I Borrow a Dollar? wasn’t a major commercial hit, peaking at No. 70 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, its impact went beyond the numbers. The album introduced the world to Common’s sharp lyricism and distinctive Chicago style while helping bring more national attention to the city’s emerging hip-hop scene. 34 years later, the album remains the starting point of a legendary career. Happy anniversary to Can I Borrow a Dollar? 🎤💿🔥
