Two Phoenix brothers held a first-of-its-kind charity golf tournament on Saturday to honor their mother, Beverly, who died of breast cancer 10 years ago.
Benjamin and Owen Fitzhugh organized the Beverly Fitzhugh Memorial Charity Golf Tournament at Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix on Oct. 3. Dozens of golfers took part, and the money raised goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which funds early detection programs and hope kits for families going through cancer treatment.
For the brothers, the day was about keeping their mother’s name and voice out there while helping other families facing the disease. Owen was 16 when she died, and he said that at the time he didn’t feel he was able to honor her in a way he was proud of. A decade later, he said, it feels good to do something in her memory.
It was also a meaningful day on the course. It has been 10 years since the Fitzhugh family of four has been able to golf together, and their father joined in the event.
