“This young woman can have anything she wants in this life.” As I sat with Jenna’s father to ask for her hand in marriage, he shared an experience they had with their teenage daughter. In our faith we receive what is called a patriarchal blessing, a sacred, inspired blessing given through a patriarch who speaks by the Spirit to reveal God’s promises, counsel, and vision for our lives. Immediately after Jenna’s blessing, the patriarch turned to her parents and said, “This young woman can have anything she wants in life.” He understood the depth, beauty, and divine potential God saw and expressed to Jenna that day. Her father gave me his permission to marry her, something I am still deeply grateful for.
