Anthropic just released Claude Haiku 5.5, and this is exactly where the AI race is getting interesting.
Haiku 5.5 is built for high-volume tasks such as summarization, classification, customer support, browser use and coding subagents. Anthropic says it is roughly 75% cheaper to run than Haiku 4.5 while posting large gains across computer use, knowledge work, reasoning, coding and visual understanding.
That cost-performance curve matters more than another headline benchmark.
The small-model race is becoming a scale race. If compact models can handle increasingly capable work at a fraction of the cost, companies can deploy far more agents, automate more workflows and push AI into places where frontier-model economics previously made no sense.
The next wave of adoption may not be driven by the biggest models. It may be driven by the models cheap enough to run everywhere.
