Nine years ago today, college football gave us one of the funniest broadcasting mistakes you’ll ever see.
During Eastern Michigan’s 2017 game at Toledo, kicker Paul Fricano attempted a 50-yard field goal with the Eagles trailing 3–0. The kick sailed clearly wide right, but CBS Sports Network analyst and former NFL kicker Jay Feely somehow thought it went through, saying it had gone “off the crossbar” and celebrating what he believed was a game-tying field goal.
The confusion was even funnier because Feely’s broadcast partner had already correctly noted that Fricano had missed. After the commercial break, Feely laughed about the mistake and admitted the kick had fooled him while watching it live. Fricano later connected from 46 yards in the third quarter, but Eastern Michigan ultimately fell to Toledo 20–15.
It wasn’t actually a bad officiating call — just an all-time broadcasting moment that somehow gets funnier every time you watch it.
