For over a decade the Trump Administration has been working to dismantle birthright citizenship in the United States. They often use xenophobic and racist arguments to argue for its end. To deny birthright citizenship to future Americans would mean there would be people born and raised entirely in this country yet unable to be considered Americans by law. The U.S. government could deport them to a country they are not even from, forcing them to live a completely different life against their own will. I imagine for people like President Trump, this is intentional as they want to define American identity as whiteness, masculinity and heteronormativity being the only valid identities. The American identity should never have one definition or be rooted in bigoted and hierarchical ideas.
