Is there a cheaper edge in fishing than two minutes with a biro?
Wind, cloud, where it came from and what it did overnight. Where the rods went, what depth, what came off which spot and what didn't. Whether anybody else on there had a bite. Two minutes at the end of a session, and most of it feels completely pointless while it's being written.
Then a year in it starts showing. The same corner going on the same wind. The week in October when it switches. The bait that was doing the work that turns out wasn't. Guessing turns into knowing, and none of it shows up inside one session no matter how hard I concentrate.
There's research on this outside fishing, the deliberate practice stuff, and the figure they land on is that structured practice accounts for somewhere around twenty to twenty six percent of the difference between people in skilled pursuits. Not everything, then. But a fifth of it, for two minutes and a biro.
Start one this week and thank yourself in the spring.
