What happens to a carp's appetite the week the lake drops from nine degrees to seven?
It falls off a step, not a slope. Under about seven or eight degrees a carp's metabolism slows right down, and by six they're taking a tiny fraction of what they ate in the warm. Still feeding, still very catchable, but on a fraction of the food.
Which changes what goes in. A July sized bed of bait sits there working against you now, and a handful with a hookbait they can actually find is the whole approach. I'd rather put in too little and top up than watch a bed of boilies go off on a spot for two days.
And carry a thermometer. It's the one bit of kit that tells you which week you're actually in, because nine is not seven and seven is not six.
